Scamming College Athletes

Now that college athletes can get NIL money there are lots of scams out there. People are trying to cash in on money coming from the schools or from NIL collectives. I’ve heard about a few things from friends and other athletes.

One scam going is that someone contacts you and says they are a recruiter, and they are super tight with a lot of D1 schools and will help you get a roster spot and scholarship. They want you to pay them for this service and then turns out they don’t really know anyone. People like this contact you mostly in X and Instagram so you have to do research about who you talk with. Another scam going is about people who say they can help you get NIL money. They will help you promote yourself and then land great brand deals. In this type, they are keeping a percentage of your contract and maybe even ask for some money up front to represent you. Similar to the other scam, these people don’t really have connections or the business knowledge to help with this type of thing. And, they will charge a huge amount. Same as before, it’s important to do research and if you are interested in either of these types of services, to make sure they are actually good. Checking references and looking at their contacts will help. Those with professional websites with testimonials from athletes you may know is also a good sign.

  1. You’ve certainly had a lot of these type of inquires come through on Twitter in the last few years. Agree, it’s hard to figure out which are legitimate.

  2. You’ve gone a tremendous job with your website. It’s great watching you kick – we’re proud of you! Please watch things closely, these scams seem awful. Any time there is money involved, these types of things pop up on websites and social media.
